You are the storyteller of your own life, and you can create your own legend or not.
- Isabel Allende
Facts are meaningless without a contextural story. Don’t tell facts to influence, tell stories. The more you improve storytelling, the more your influence … it is as simple as that.
Stories make it easier for people to understand. They are the best way, by far, to spread your ideas.
I have been writing, creating ideas, and telling stories for many years. Here is a 10 step checklist to continually improve on this important skill:
Your improvement … is directly related to your practice
If the story is boring to you … it will be boring to you audience
Learn to tell … both sides of the story
Experiments with styles … try new things
Get into a routine … and stick to it
Read a lot … diverse sources/topics … all the time
Take notes … on the best ideas/favorite things you find … save them
There doesn’t always … have to be a moral to your story
Take breaks … I shoot for every 90 minutes or so … and do something totally different (like a yard task)
Review your notes … every few weeks for idea combination and synthesis
Do you have any additional tips that you use to improve your storytelling that you could add to this list?
What about your experiences with writer’s block … any stories to share ?
